DEWLAP RABBIT

 

INTRODUCTION

 

On social media or in real life if you have seen rabbits deeply you observe an unusual large are under the chin. You may think there is some physically defect in rabbit. Dewlap is found as  a fat under the jaws of female rabbit. The process occurs as a result of delay in spraying on them. This type of condition found in mainly large breed and lop eared rabbits. Male rabbits have small dewlap.

 

FEMALE RABBIT DEWLAP

Female rabbit does not born with a dewlap .It develops when female rabbit during pregnancy makes nest for her incoming newborn kit as a result dewlap originates ..The female breeds normally reaches to sexual maturity  in 4-6 months of their age. Dewlap size depends mainly on genes. Usually dewlap in female rabbits are normally a sign of being healthy and normal, but a dewlap which is big in size may cause problem.

 

SIZE OF DEWLAP

The dewlap size does not matters the weight of the rabbit any how if the dewlap size increase due to overweight consult vet doctor. In this case starchy vegetables should cut down so it can help in the reduction of weight.

 

RABIT HAIR PULLING PROCESS

 

 

Hair pulling of unsprayed female rabbits having dewlap is due to sexual stimulation and stress which is also found in sprayed doe. 

 

MALE RABBIT DEWLAP

 

Male rabbits have dewlaps less marked then in female rabbits. Having dewlaps in male rabbits have high estrogen level.

Wet dewlap is sagging skin found under rabbit chin. The normal dewlap becomes wet if a rabbit is drinking from bowl or cup instead of bottle.

INDICATION OF WET DEWLAP

 

Hair falling from the infected skin and are becomes reddish. Then the color turns green and attract flies which lays eggs on it highly severe condition.

 

WET DEWLAP TREATMENT

If treat in initial stage the treatment is easy. Doctors will cut down dewlap from the skin so that skin will be dry. Doctor will then give you precautions how to prevent the skin from damp.

 

PREVENTION FROM WET DEWLAP

Ø TO prevent from having wet dewlap keep the surrounding area of rabbits dry.

Ø Cut the hair on the dewlap and keep the skin dry.

Ø Keep the cage of rabbit clean and remove any damp cloth where rabbit sits.

Scientific research show that there are about 50 breeds of rabbits. The rabbits mainly like living in large and open space and it is good for their hygiene, rabbits have danger of having heat stroke so must be kept in temperature from 60F to 75F.Glands found in rabbits are of three types(single chin gland, paired inguinal gland and paired anal glands. It is fur damage in rabbit which  is due to several reasons .Especially fur plucking, hormonal disturbance, dewlap, pulling of the areas of belly and legs which occurs in pregnant female rabbits who are ready to make nests. Fur plucking is seen during diet deficiency just like their food lacks fiber, obesity  found in rabbit having rashes in skin and have blade skin.

 

OTHER DISEASES

 

RABBIT SYPHILIS

 

A bacteria pronounce Treponema Cuniculi which is known as spirochete which cause syphilis in humans basically causes dermatitis around the nose of rabbit but in critical condition it may be found on face and around eyes.

During medically treatment vet doctor should examine that the rabbit may not have intestinal problem.

ROTAVIRUS DISEASE 

 

It causes diarrhea in rabbits.

 

CONCLUSION

 

After research it is examined that dewlap are another rabbits sex character in female mature  rabbits. It develops in female rabbits for a limited period from which it is considered that female sex hormone quantity level is so much to maintain the existence of dewlap. A prominent dewlap is found in 50% female mature rabbits and 7% in male rabbits. Dewlap helps female rabbits to keep their kits away from cold in winter season. Some breeds have dewlap which are bigger in size some are:

o   Flemish giant rabbit

o   Belgian hare rabbit

o   California lop rabbit

 

The breeds who have smaller dewlap or to less found in them.

·        Giant Papillion rabbit

·        self rex rabbits

·        Havana rabbits

·        English rabbits

·        Champagne  d' Argent rabbits

 

 

The sprayed rabbit lack sex hormone lacks dewlap because these rabbits cannot give to birth to babies.

Health related issues like obesity, pulling of fur even though pregnancy not occur in female rabbit, grooming not in a proper way, wet dewlap.

prevention to the problems related to having dewlap give starch free diet to rabbits, make free area for them to play or for running and stay, feed them through bottle instead of cup and try feeding then with own hand as their large dewlap makes problem in eating.

So we conclude that if rabbit has dewlap it is not worrying caring  by us is necessarily in this condition.

If the female rabbit us pregnant it will show more interest in other male rabbits in that area or attack them. Make nest by gathering pare and grass and will pull down skin from dewlap and chest.
